Ringing Sound in Ear: Tinnitus Causes and Treatment
Tinnitus is the perception of ringing, buzzing, or humming without external sound. It may be temporary or persistent and can affect concentration, sleep, and mental well-being.
Common tinnitus triggers
Tinnitus can be associated with hearing loss, noise exposure, earwax blockage, middle ear disease, stress, sleep deprivation, and some medications. Proper assessment is needed to identify reversible causes.
Evaluation pathway
ENT evaluation usually includes detailed history, ear examination, and hearing tests. Additional investigations are advised only when clinically indicated by associated symptoms.
Management options
Management may include treating underlying ear disease, hearing rehabilitation, sound therapy, sleep optimization, stress reduction strategies, and counseling for symptom control.
